Leaving a legacy

Find out more by reading our PDF guide to leaving a legacy (we can send paper copies on request).

A gift to Essex will enrich the lives of future generations. Every donation – large or small – makes a difference.

Making a will means you decide what happens to your money and assets.

  • You can support our students, facilities or research - and you can tell us if you want to direct your money to a specific area of research.
  • You can decide to leave books, art or shares to the University.
  • Or, you can keep it simple and ask the University to decide how your legacy is used.

We’re happy to discuss it with you to make sure your gift supports the things you care about.

  • Former professor Chris Winston helped us to refurbish the Lakeside Theatre, which now hosts the annual Winston Lecture.
  • One Honorary Graduate left us a collection of his papers and a donation to the Albert Sloman Llibrary to buy books.
  • Local barrister John Silberrad’s will has allowed us to fund a number of PhD scholarships.

Tax-efficient

Remembering Essex can be tax-efficient, because the University is an ‘exempt charity’. Find out more on the HM Revenue & Customs site.
