Asia Graduation

On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Forster, we are honoured to invite alumni to attend an exclusive event for Essex graduates and their families. For the first time, the University of Essex will offer graduates an opportunity to attend another Graduation Ceremony in Asia and we would love you to join us.

  • Saturday 23 February 2019
  • 11.00-17.00: arrival, gowning and photographs followed by the ceremony and a reception

  • £40 per graduate (including gown hire, entry to ceremony and reception)
  • £30 per guest (including entry to ceremony and reception)

Event Information

Who can attend?

All alumni are invited to attend whether they live in Asia or are travelling. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.

I have already attended graduation on campus, can I come?

Yes. This is an opportunity for you to graduate again in front of your guests.

I did not attend graduation on campus, can I come?

Yes. This is an opportunity for you to officially graduate in front of your guests.

Which ticket do I need?

  • Graduate ticket – this is for alumni who wish to participate in the Graduation ceremony and reception
  • Guest ticket – this is for your family/friends who wish to attend the ceremony and reception

Can I bring guests?

Yes, we are pleased to offer guest tickets.

What is included in the cost of my ticket?

  • £40 per graduate (including gown hire, entry to ceremony and reception)
  • £30 per guest (including entry to ceremony and reception)

Official photographs and merchandise are not included in the ticket price but can be purchased on the day for an additional fee.

Is there a booking deadline?

You can book tickets until Monday 11 February but we recommend you book as soon as possible as there's only a limited number remaining.

What happens at Graduation?

Graduates will wear their gowns and be introduced by name before crossing the stage to be received by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Forster. Guests will be watching in the audience and there will be a reception after the ceremony with refreshments and the opportunity for everyone to celebrate.

What is the format and timings on the day?

  • 11.00: Arrival, gowning and photographs
  • 13.00: Ceremony
  • 15.00: Reception with refreshments
  • 17.00: Event closes

Can I get a refund if I can no longer attend?

Unfortunately we are unable to offer refunds for tickets. However, if you can find either a fellow graduate or guest to transfer the relevant ticket to, we will accept this. In order to do so, please email alumni@essex.ac.uk by Monday 11 February 2019 with the change of name.

Can I get official photographs?

Yes, we will have an official photographer joining us and the opportunity to purchase photos in your robes and with your guests.

Where do I get my gown/photographs from?

We will send you all the information and timings you will need prior to the event.

Dress code

All graduating students are required to wear the University of Essex academic robes. Graduation is a formal ceremony and as such smart clothing must be worn. Graduates can wear what they feel fits their gender identity and expression best underneath their gowns, as long as it is smart. Denim, t-shirts, trainers, flip-flops and other items of casual clothing are not deemed appropriate for Graduation events. International graduates who would like to wear their own national dress under their gown are very welcome to do so. Guests are encouraged to also wear smart attire.

Dietary/access requirements

Please let us know if you have any dietary or access requirements when you book your ticket.

How do I order my gown and mortarboard?

When you book your ticket, you will be asked to let us know your height and hat size so that we can order these for you.

How will I receive my tickets?

We will send you your tickets by email to the email address you provided prior to the event.

Can I get a discount on hotel rooms at the Wanda Vista Beijing?

Yes! Just email damon.liu@wandahotels.com quoting 'University of Essex' to take advantage of our exclusive rate for event attendees.
